Slayers Fight!

This week:

Gourry Gabriev and Zelgadiss Greywords

Episode I

Welcome to Slayers Fight! This is the first episode in what will be a series, comparing the heroes (and villians!) of Slayers to comparable characters in other shows. I'll try to provide a realistic and humorous look at the strengths and weaknesses of all our favorite Slayers characters, and their best matches in other anime, movies, and TV shows.

In honor of this first episode, we're grabbing a villian out of another Episode I. Star Wars to be exact! The dreaded Darth Maul, feared Sith lord, will be our contender this week. Who shall stand against him? Blade against blade and Force against force seems most fitting. The great swordsman Gourry Gabriev and the masterful mage Zelgadiss Greywords will be our champions.

The Slayers Favorites

In the Slayers corner, we have the two male leads, Gourry and Zelgadiss. Gourry is a swordsman extraordinaire; his talent is undisputed and unmatched. Zelgadiss is no stranger to swordplay either, and is also a quite capable sorcerer. These two have a lot of fighting experience in their pasts, and when you put them together you have a powerful duo!

The Contender

Our villian is nothing to scoff at, though. Darth Maul is a powerful Sith warrior, well-trained in the use of the Force and martial arts. In Epidose I he had 2 Jedi, a Knight and a Master, on the run for half the movie! His full assault battle style, combining lightning-quick lightsaber combat with ruthless use of the Force, will require Zel and Gourry to pull together and throw everything they have at him!

Quick Break Down:

Detailed Analysis:

* Just kidding there, of course Gourry has a mind! You could say he's simple-minded sometimes, but in combat make that single-mindedness.

Looking at each contestants' strengths and abilities, this seems to be an even match. All three fighters are powerhouses of strength and agility, and are well-versed in the nuances of battle. Gourry's talent as a swordsman is well-documented: he can cut down trees and take on an army with a regular sword, and with the Sword of Light he's a force to be reckoned with for a mid-level Mazoku. Zelgadiss is similarly capable, and on top of that is part chimera - impervious to normal weapons, and with enhanced strength and sorcery. Darth Maul is up to the challenge though. Sith lords expect to take on several Jedi at a time, and Maul is no exception!

And on top of the sword-fighting, all three contestants have considerable added powers. Zelgadiss knows many Shamanistic and Elemental spells, and in close combat a well-placed Fireball or Ray Wing can sure come in handy. Darth Maul in turn commands the Force, through which he can jump higher, move faster, throw his opponents around, and see things before they happen! As for Gourry, he may seem to come up short in this category at first, but he actually has a lot of abilities beyond simple sword-swinging. He has a great command of battle tactics, he can leap and "fly" with the best Levitators, and his pure force of will is enough to face off against any sorcerer. And let's not forget that, hanging around with Lina so much, he's developed a high resistance to explosive spells!

Final Remarks:

Expect this to be an intense fight. We're dealing with the best of the best in swordfighting, with enough use of magic and the Force to keep the action coming fast! Like the climactic Jedi battle in Star Wars, the fight is bound to rage back and forth, all over the landscape, with everyone else getting out of the way (assuming Lina and crew don't make an appearance, that is!). As both sides begin to tire, Darth Maul will naturally try to eliminate one of his opponents. And as with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, he'll go for the one with a stronger command of sorcery, so he'll have an advantage over the other fighter. But as he takes a chance and leaves himself open to try to impale Zelgadiss, he'll learn the hard way that, while a chimera can be injured by the Sword of Light, a mere lightsaber is just not going to cut it...

The Winners: Gourry and Zelgadiss!!

Up Next: Filia vs. Puff the Magic Dragon!
