How'd you find us? I'm the Graphics Designer for it!
What'd you like? I love that people love the work the staff does.
Comments: Hey everyone! Akane no Hime here!
"Zelgadis Graywords" last post really got me thinking...the staff here has never really clarified our source for hte official spellings for the Slayers character's names. So I'm just going to take a minute here to explain:
Esther and I did a lot of research on what the official English spellings for the names of the Slayers characters would be, even going so far as to read how their names were written in Japanese (a language we can both read and speak relatively well).
Specifically addressing "Zeldagis Graywords" post, there is no "L" in the Japanese language; the closest letter they have to it is "R." When Ameria's name is written in Japanese, it is spelled with the Hiragana characters "A-me-ri-a"...the reason why in the subtitled editions of the Slayers tapes/DVDs it sometimes sounds as if the characters are saying "Amelia" is because when the Japanese try to pronounce the "L" sound, they pronounce "R" but flip their tongue to produce as close a sound as possible.
Similarly, regarding the spelling of Zelgadiss' name, both Esther and I referenced the original manga and art books to accurately discover the correct pronunciation and spelling. Technically, in Hiragana, Zelgadiss' name is written, "Ze-ru-ga-de-i-su" (just as with "L," there is no "DI" sound in Japanese, so they use "DE" followed by an "I" and scoop the vowel while pronouncing it...When this is spoken quickly, it sounds as if they are saying "DI," when in all actuality they aren't). Whenever we have seen official Slayers literature or merchandise written with his name in English, his first name has been spelled with two “S’s” as well. As for Zel's last name, Esther and I have seen it written both as "Greywords" and "Graywords" on official Slayers literature and merchandise...so we merely picked only one version of the spelling of his last name to stick with for consistency’s sake on the site.
I hope that clears up any confusion that was caused over their names.
Lots of Smiles,
Akane no Hime
